buy. they got tents out and the heavy clothing. there is a line which wraps around the store and the store doesn't open till 5:00 a.m. earlier they were having fun before it got too cold. they have been lining up for days hoping to get their hands on deals. here is what a few are hoping to buy. >> a 40-inch tv that they have. >> i was looking for a laptop for school. originally it's $500. but i checked the add and it's $200. >> a pair of head phones. the doctor j head phones. dr. j head phones. >> they don't open till 5:00 a.m. but some stores open right now. kron 4's jonathan bloom is outside the toys r us store. there is a line behind you.

>> reporter: yes. if you can believe this, this line started going in an hour ago and the line is still so long, you can see it stretches around the corner and we can't even see the end of it. they have been letting people into the store 50 at a time. here is a shot from earlier. the folks here were lined up with their shopping carts. many with their kids. just eager to get into the store, get the deals and leave with their toys. just a few minutes ago we saw people leaving with skate boards, video games. these people are very, very impatient to get into the store and get their shopping season started. as you start shopping you may want to know about things, this

season for shop is a ripe time for thieves to pray on shoppers. >> reporter: the rush has become an american tradition as the thanksgiving turkey. the season for giving can also be a season for taking. if you are not careful the bargains could end up in the hands of thieves. keep your purse or wallet on your body. pay with plastic or if you can't, write a check. the goal is to do whatever you can to avoid carrying cash. don't carry huge piles of merchandise either. police say take a trip to the car and lock up the bargains in the trunk. make sure your other valuables are out of site. gps, ipod and cell phones are all reason enough for a thief to smash the window.

if you are shopping with kids, make sure they know to find a clerk or security guard if they get separated from you. it's a good idea to shop with a group of friends or relatives. >> reporter: if you are shopping late in the night, try not to park your car in an area that is poorly lit. when you are walking to and from your car have your keys in your hand. this shopping here, as you can see the line is around the corner, this is not the first shopping that has been going on. shopping has been going on earlier and earlier. kate thompson has more on the bargain hundters. >> reporter: open and ready for business.

stores were open this holiday, rolling out the sales early, trying to attract customers before black friday. >> $10. >> i got a skirt and head bands for $10. good deals. >> reporter: $10 shirts, $5 gloves and 30% off boots had market street packed. old navy, shoppers cleaning up on discounted items. lucking out with the holiday sales and getting their gears for less. >> i came to san francisco without jacket so it was cold so very good. very good sales. >> good price. >> we had a lovely -- >> reporter: while many stores were open for part of the day, most wal-mart are open 24

hours. >> vacuum for my wife. power cookers. rice cooker. pots and pans for her. a kettle. and that's pretty much it and dog food for my dog. everything was on sale. i had no problem. >> reporter: for people who didn't shop on thanksgiving, not to worry. many of the stores opening in the morning. forever 21 will be open at midnight, american eagle, 5:00 a.m. kate thompson, kron 4 news. before you hit the black friday sales here are a few things to remember, more than 13 million people are still paying off last year's depths. compare prices, keep receipts, don't fall for extended warrants, look for free shipping offers. also while debt cards will not

wrack up debt, they don't offer the same protection as most credit cards. i feel bad for those people waiting in line because it is cold out there. temperatures in the 30s. 31 in fairfield. 31 -- 38 in red wood city. 40 in oakland and it will only get colder. freeze warning, frost advisory. temperatures in the same range as the past couple of days. 20s to 30s. tomorrow, 9:00 a.m., if you are heading out early, grab the jacket and gloves. into the afternoon, things will be pleasant. a 35-year-old man is recovering after falling from a rock near mount diablo. he fell 30 feet.

a chopper had to fly into a remote area to get him. they brought him back safely to land. officers said he injured his back and his legs. a two alarm fire destroyed auspice of san jose history. a neighbor took these pictures of a 116-year-old home burning. that was this morning. the home is on the south side of town. you can see the house was engulfed by the time the firefighters arrived. the city was planning to move that home to a nearby park as a display. the cause of the fire is under investigation. if you hit the road tonight, tomorrow or this weekend, you better keep safety in mind. the chp is keeping an eye out

tonight's headlines, within the last half hour south korea said it heard new sounds of artillery on the same island attacked by north korea. it's not clear where it's coming from. the south koreaen president ordered more troops to go to the island. north korea says the u.s. military drills planned for this weekend will push the peninsula to the brink of war. the days are number for four loko, they should be off shelves next month. the drink combination could cause alcohol poisoning, car accidents and assaults. president obama showed his appreciation for u.s. service men and women today.

important for the homeless community. >> they are down, they are out. they are not feeling like they should be and could be if someone would help them. that's what we are here for. that's why thanksgiving is so important. >> today they served more than 5,000 meals. another tradition, st. anthony's church celebrated its 60th anniversary of feeding the poor and homeless community. hundreds of volunteers wered for days so they could all enjoy their thanksgiving. organizers are hapee to give a good hot meal to people who would otherwise go hundley. they served 5,000 pounds of turkey and more than 4,000 individual slices of pumpkin pie. in sports, the usual plate of nfl games on tap this holiday. in san francisco only one game
